Rebates & Tax Credits

Rebates are offered through Efficiency Maine, and are usually instant.

Tax Credits are offered through the IRS, and can be claimed come tax time.

Let’s break it down;

Efficiency Maine Rebates

Efficiency Maine rebates are exactly that, rebates. For most of our customers they elect to have the expected rebate taken from the cost of installation. We, here at Impact, are Residential Registered Vendors, which means we are not only able to offer the rebate but also able to receive the rebate on your behalf, thus saving you money on your initial investment. Because we wait for your rebate, you don’t have to.

Currently, Efficiency Maine is providing rebates for all income levels, with higher rebates for those with low-and moderate-income. Mainers looking for rebates must agree to ‘full home heating’. If you are looking for a single room heat pump, at this time, there are no rebates.

Efficiency Maine Rebates are as follows;

Low Income - 80% of project cost up to $8,000.00 lifetime rebate.

IRS Tax Credits

IRS Tax Credits are usually applied when you file your taxes. Although not a ‘rebate’ a tax credit can help when you owe taxes. For some, it can make installation a low cost measure. As always, check with your tax accountant for the most reliable source of information regarding the tax credits.

IRS Tax Credit

Inflation Reduction Act of 2022

Through December 31, 2022, the energy efficient home improvement credit is a $500 lifetime credit. As amended by the IRA, the energy efficient home improvement credit is increased for years after 2022, with an annual credit of generally up to $1,200. Beginning January 1, 2023, the amount of the credit is equal to 30% of the sum of amounts paid by the taxpayer for certain qualified expenditures, including (1) qualified energy efficiency improvements installed during the year, (2) residential energy property expenditures during the year, and (3) home energy audits during the year. There are limits on the allowable annual credit and on the amount of credit for certain types of qualified expenditures. The credit is allowed for qualifying property placed in service on or after January 1, 2023, and before January 1, 2033.

Heat Pump Eligibility

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, the credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses, including:

  • Qualified energy efficiency improvements installed during the year

  • Residential energy property expenses

There are limits on the allowable annual credit and on the amount of credit for certain types of qualified expenses. The credit is allowed for qualifying property placed in service on or after Jan. 1, 2023, and before Jan. 1, 2033.

The maximum credit you can claim each year is:

  • $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps

The credit has no lifetime dollar limit. You can claim the maximum annual credit every year that you make eligible improvements until 2033.

The credit is nonrefundable, so you can't get back more on the credit than you owe in taxes. You can't apply any excess credit to future tax years.
